MADULA 2025 “Joined by a Drum” showcase – New Vic Theatre, 13th March 2025

March 13, 2025 @ 19:30 - 21:30

MADULA and New Vic Borderlines are ‘Joined by a Drum’ – a showcase of work from across North Staffs communities and age groups, celebrating diversity through Ugandan music & dance.

This exciting Showcase is a culmination of an international creative partnership with Madula and MamaMusic School Uganda, joined in the UK by New Vic Borderlines.

‘Joined by a Drum’ will showcase the amazing work that has taken place across the community with performances ranging from primary school children to seniors form U3A, alongside international artists including Jaguza Ugandan percussion troupe, Mr.Will guitar, Andy Edwards (former drummer of Robert Plant).

Madula’s 2025 showcase will be dedicated to the memory of co-founding member Stephen Dawson “Mr.D” whose music and teaching has touched the lives of so many!

The second half will feature a special concert dedicated to Mr.D, performed by members of the Madula team and the international artists from across the world!

Madula delivers creative & cultural projects for children, young people & community groups across The Midlands, developing social cohesion, empowering people & reducing isolation through music, dance & other creative engagements.

New Vic Borderlines is the award-winning initiative using theatre in social contexts. It works regionally, nationally and internationally, using theatre and creativity to help people find new and positive ways to understand themselves, their communities and their responsibilities. Creating stories of who we are today and celebrating the richness and diversity of the world we all share.

Approx running time: 7.30pm – 9.45pm

The face value of tickets for this event is £10 but they are free thanks to sponsorship from Madula, Arts Council England and New Vic Borderlines.

A trio of world class musicians from different continents here in our festival really was something special. To see them perform a set with local community residents before going onto play their world class music just made it a fantastic night! Please come again

  • Rod Grainger, Head of Participation, Children & Leaving Care,
Madula and its professional artists really have brought the best out of our young people. To see the difference in them from when they started the summer programme with low confidence to where they finished, actually performing live with energy is really just astounding!

The sense of coming together through music is something we all share, both us as drummers and audiences. A great example was playing for the lovely people at the Methodist church - who all live alone and had chance to come and be part of something’

Part of the Madula magic is the mixing of generations in the community. The showcase at the New Vic incorporated all ages and abilities - schoolchildren performing alongside U3A members, with all of us getting to play with top international artists! Drumming was the link. Everyone appreciated each other's skills and efforts
